Classical Japanese Poetry of Love and Nature: An Anthology

Jpanese classical poetry is abundant with beautiful expressions transcending human emotions into natural landscape. Often, these were written using wordplay, where nature is depicted on the surface, hinting human emotions beneath. Letting our turbulent hearts find an abode to rest in the imageries of flowers, rivers and flying birds.

Wordplay may only be a witty and comical play of words in itself. But Japanese ancient poetry tells us, when this art is employed with care, ancient poets found images for their hearts to rest on. Nature and human souls finding beautiful expressions.

This anthology presents various poems of love, death, solitude, departure and humor from classical Japanese poetry, prose and theatre.

Yoshikaze Kawakami is a Japanese writer and Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He studied classical Japanese literature in Tokyo and has published numerous poems in the Society of Classical Poets, as well as prose works in the Mori Ogai Memorial Journal, Tokyo.
